birch bark
Paper birch bark was traditionally used by the Mi'gmaq to wrap maple sugar in order to keep it for several months. The Mi'gmaq appreciated the extraordinary qualities of birch bark because it cuts and sews easily, and does not tear. It also contains a wax that repels insects, makes the packaging waterproof, and protects its contents against rotting.
So we made cones of it, which we filled with granulated sugar. We then sealed everything either with a bark lid or with bear fat, and we could then bury the containers for storing the sugar.
